A look at the 2013-14 Isles Schedule

It took long enough, but the 2013-14 New York Islanders schedule, along with the schedules for the rest of the 29 other NHL clubs, was released today. The Islanders will open up the season on the road on October 4 against the Devils and the home opener will take place the following night against the Columbus Blue Jackets, on of the three new teams in the Isles new division.

Aside from the season and home opener, there are several other games that should intrigue Isles fans this year.

Obviously the Islander-Ranger matchups are always a fan favorite. This season especially since the Isles will host the Blue Shirts at Yankee Stadium on January 29 in an outdoor contest. The game is part of the Coors Light Stadium Series and will be the second outdoor game played at Bronx Stadium that week. This will be the Islanders big chance to shine in the spotlight a bit. They had gotten a lot of attention during their stint in the postseason last year and this is only another step for the team to become recognized on a more national level.

Including the outdoor game, the Isles and Rangers will play five times in 2013-14. Three games will be played at Madison Square Garden, one will be played at Nassau Coliseum and one at Yankee Stadium.

Speaking of last season’s playoff run, the Isles will get a chance to see their playoff foe, the Pittsburgh Penguins, on October 25 for the first time since they eliminated the Isles in game six of the first round of the playoffs. That game is on the road. The Pens don’t visit Nassau Coliseum until December 3.

Another opponent that will be one to watch are the Philadelphia Flyers. Aside from the obvious division rivalry, and the pure dislike people in New York have for anything from Philly, the intrigue is to see former Islander captain Mark Streit. The first time New York will see their former captain is on October 26 when they travel to the City of Brotherly Love. Streit doesn’t make his return to Nassau Coliseum until Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 20,2014). It will be interesting to see how the fans receive their former captain.

The Detroit Red Wings make their first trip to the Coliseum as an Eastern Conference team on November 16. Prior to realignment, the Red Wings were a team Islander fans didn’t get to see much of. Now they will get to know them a bit better.

The defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks will visit Nassau Coliseum on January 2, 2014.

Like last season, the Isles will end the year on the road. Their final home game is on April 8, 2014 against the Ottawa Senators. After that they play their final three games on the road ending in Buffalo on April 13.

A few other things to note for the up coming year:

-the Islanders will have six games broadcast nationally on NBC Sports Network or NHL Network. And three games will be broadcast nation in Canada on either CBC or RDS.

-Training camps in the NHL will open on September 11.

– Exhibition games begin on September 13.
