After about a week of waiting the Islanders are finally going to kick off their 2013-14 season tonight in Newark against the Devils.
The Islanders held an optional skate this morning at the Prudential Center, while New Jersey did not skate. Brock Nelson, Frans Nielsen, Casey Cizikas, Colin McDonald, Cal Clutterbuck, Matt Martin, Peter Regin, Eric Boulton, Josh Bailey, Kyle Okposo, and Pierre-Marc Bouchard took part in the Isles skate. Thomas Hickey, Matt Donovan, Brian Strait, Griffin Reinhart, Lubomir Visnovsky, Andrew MacDonald, and Travis Hamonic also skated this morning.
Matt Carkner, Boulton and Reinhart will be scratches for tonight. Evgeni Nabokov will get the start in net and Brock Nelson will make his regular season NHL debut tonight in Newark.
The Devils are coming off a 3-0 loss to the Penguins last night. Corey Schneider started for the Devils in Pittsburgh, so Martin Brodeur will get the start tonight against the Isles.
The Islanders are 9-21-10 all time in season openers. They went 3-2-0 against the Devils last season.
