Isles Renew Radio Deal with WRHU; Add Simulcast on WRCN

The Islanders announced that they renewed their radio broadcast deal with WRHU. The Hofstra University station has been the home to Islanders hockey since 2010, but has had a weak signal in Suffolk County. In order to give fans in the Suffolk a better listening experience, the Islanders also announced that 103.9 FM WRCN will simulcast WRHU’s broadcasts.

The New York Islanders announced today a new radio broadcast agreement with WRHU 88.7 FM, Radio Hofstra University, to broadcast games throughout the 2013-14 National Hockey League season. This season, Islanders fans will also have the ability to listen to the broadcast on WRCN 103.9 FM, improving the signal further east into Suffolk County.

“We’re pleased to continue our partnership with WRHU, while also better serving our loyal fans by extending the broadcast signal further east on WRCN,” Islanders Senior Vice President Michael Picker said. “The management and students at WRHU have done an excellent job with the broadcast and we’re excited for WRCN to help us improve our broadcast reach into Suffolk County.”

Islanders Radio veteran Chris King will once again produce the broadcasts and serve as the radio voice, handling the play-by-play duties. Hofstra University students will assist in the broadcast and have the opportunity to serve as color analysts and sideline reporters.

Dr. Evan Cornog, Dean of the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University, said:  “WRHU is a college radio station that holds itself to the highest professional standards, so we are delighted to enter into a fourth year as the flagship radio station for a great professional sports franchise, the New York Islanders.”

The Islanders will open the season on the road against the New Jersey Devils on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Team captain John Tavares and the Islanders will play the following night, Saturday, Oct. 5, their home opener at Nassau Coliseum, against the Columbus Blue Jackets.  The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m.

“JVC Broadcasting is incredibly proud to partner with Hofstra University and the New York Islanders to carry the games in Suffolk County,” General Manager of WRCN Matthew Goldapper said. “Residents from Islip to Montauk will now have the ability to listen to all of the action on 103.9 FM.”

Report: Isles Radio Coverage Change in Near Future

Islanders Point Blank is reporting that there could be a change in the Isles radio coverage. A source told the SNY.TV blog that “a change to the Islanders radio deal is imminent and could happen as early as next season.”

Since 2010, WRHU Radio Hofstra University has carried every Islander hockey game, with veteran play-by-play man Chris King calling the game alongside Hofstra broadcast students.  With WHRU being a college station the range is limited and it showed in Arbitron ratings released today. The Islanders had the lowest cume (which is the cumulative audience of a broadcast) among Persons 6+ with just 2,000 and had just a 0.1 share when it came to men ages 25-54.

As expected the Rangers, who’s games are broadcast on ESPN New York 98.7, and Devils, who are on WFAN, both finished ahead of the Islanders.

WFAN and ESPN New York both carried Isles games during the team’s first round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. However those game were produced by the students at WRHU.

Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark also suggested the team would try to get on a “major” radio station when asked by a fan on twitter. Yormark and the Barclays Business operations staff is now running the business side of the Islanders.
